Ismaili Centre

Designed for the Ismaili Muslim Community by Casson Conder, the building provides for religious, cultural and social needs and serves a large number of people for a variety of formal and informal occasions. On a prominent island site there was an opportunity for a building of presence conceived in the round. In scale it is appropriate to the houses that lie to the south while in key it relates to the public and institutional buildings for which South Kensington is famous. The Ismaili Centre was to be foremost a London building with exterior colours and materials compatible with surrounding architecture while at the same time being in keeping with traditional Islamic qualities.
