Kazuo Shinohara, Tanikawa Villa, 1974

Charles Holland: “My fantasy post-lockdown trip is definitely to Tokyo with an excursion out to see the Tanikawa Villa. I’m fascinated by Shinohara’s work and the Tanikawa Villa is the strangest, most compelling of his houses for me. Two thirds of the plan is taken up with a deeply odd inside/outside space where the gentle slope the houses sits on continues through the house. It’s also positioned very particularly so that one side of the roof comes down almost to the ground effectively hiding the interior from view.
“I could easily have chosen houses by Kazunari Sakamoto, Toyo Ito or Atelier Bow Wow so the when What Building? organises the trip for me please allow plenty of time for a full itinerary!”
