“What better place for an escapist quarantine fantasy than a gigantic concrete bird in the Indonesian jungle?
“Known locally as the Chicken Church, it is the work of Daniel Alamsjah, who received a vision in 1989 telling him to build a prayer house in the shape of a dove. ‘Actually, it did look like a dove – in the beginning,’ recalls a member of the construction crew.’
‘But then we added the crown. Daniel wanted it to symbolise holiness, but people thought it was a rooster crest. So they started calling it a chicken instead of a dove.'” – Olly Wainwright.
